Robert Fintelmann, MD grew up in Southern Germany hiking with his family of six. After completing his medical training at the University of Ulm in Germany, he traveled to the United States for his Ophthalmology residency, which he accomplished at the prestigious Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then pursued a Corneal and Refractive Surgery Fellowship at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) before joining Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center.
Dr. Fintelmann is a board certified Ophthalmologist by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as the American College of Surgeons. He provides excellence in ophthalmic patient care as he has had extensive clinical and surgical experience with corneal disease, cataracts, and vision correction. He has performed thousands of cataract surgeries, over two thousand vision correction procedures (including LASIK, PRK, and ICL), and hundreds of corneal transplants. Dr. Fintelmann's experience includes a range of procedures: laser assisted cataract surgery, full corneal transplants, partial thickness corneal transplants (DSAEK, DMEK,DALK), laser assisted transplants, and laser surgery to implant intracorneal segments for keratoconus (Intacs).
Dr. Fintelmann is committed to innovation and advancing the field of Ophthalmology. He actively participates in research protocols, including a recent cornea crosslinking study. His research has been published in peer-review medical journals and he has presented at national and international meetings. Dr. Fintelmann is an appointed Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona and continues to teach residents from the Wills Eye Institute. He speaks fluent German, English, Spanish, and French. In addition, Dr. Fintelmann has enjoyed using his language and ophthalmological talents in other countries to where he has traveled with Orbis, an organization which aims to provide accessible and sustainable eyecare internationally.
