Dr. Abrahamsen's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Abrahamsen "Dr. Abrahamsen began his career in a Family Practice residency at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine, but soon found his professional passion in Emergency Medicine. He was part of a wave in the nation to develop the specialty of Emergency Medicine. He brought his high standard of care to several emergency departments in Maine. His next ambition came to fruition when he developed the practice of Hyperbaric Medicine and Chronic Wound care. He was instrumental in developing wound care centers at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Maine and St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston. He has managed acutely ill patients with hyperbaric medicine over the past 20 years. He changed the lives of many people living with chronic wounds (such as venous leg ulcers) and venous disease. His contributions to wound care have helped reduce the limb amputation rate in Central Maine. He remains passionate about patient care in a world that has seemingly lost interest. Currently, his private practice focuses on chronic venous disease and chronic wounds. The use of endovenous laser ablation (varicose vein treatment) requires no patient sedation and allows patients to return to normal activities with minimal downtime after this procedure, antiquating older procedures like stripping. The actual laser procedure averages 8-minutes, although patients should plan on being in the office for one hour. Dr. Abrahamsen's success at endovenous laser management has led him to recently perfect a 5-minute outpatient technique of laser closure for perforator veins that have previously failed with other treatments. Dr. Abrahamsen excels at ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy which is used to treat other smaller damaged veins and compliments laser ablation. He agrees with other leaders in the field that by completing all treatment modalities and managing adequate stocking compression, the best possible results can be achieved. Cosmetic treatments are then more likely to be successful and long lasting. Dr. Abrahamsen is the only physician in New England who manages and treats both venous disease and chronic wounds consistently (including venous leg ulcers) at this level of expertise – one of the best in our community. Patients and physicians can feel secure that they will receive the highest standard of care with a complete plan of education and treatment. Visit our vein center for treatments such as EVLT, vein therapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, among many others."
