This content was provided by Dr. Wiet I practice the field of otology and neurotology. We help patients with problems with hearing, balance and facial nerve function - and help them with tumors of the skull base. I have a particular interest in the area of acoustic neuroma - which is a benign tumor of the eighth cranial nerve - and work in a collaborative fashion with the departments of neurosurgery and radiation oncology to offer those patients a full array of treatment options. It's a privilege to be able to help people with hearing restoration and restoration of their balance function. A few areas where we can help people are fixation of the little bones of hearing, in particular the third bone of hearing can be removed and replaced with a small prosthesis and restore their hearing. When patients have inner-ear hearing loss to the point where hearing aids don't help them anymore, we have something available called a cochlear implant that really can dramatically improve their lives. When you can restore someone's hearing, it gives me chills - that's the special part about what we do, when you can really help somebody in that way.
