First off, I have been very frustrated dealing with HOAG in general. I went to Dr. Lee and I felt the appointment was rushed and impersonal. I didn't get the sense that he really wanted to get to know me or understand my situation. From what I've read, he's a very skilled surgeon, but he really does need to change his approach with patients. It made me feel like just a number. When I asked a question, he told me to go home and "Google it." I also found that communicating with the office was very difficult. I left a lot of voicemails that went unanswered or when I did receive a call back, I couldn't pick up the phone because I was working... It was an endless game of phone tag. I ended up going to a different surgeon outside of HOAG, that had much better communication.

I definitely would not recommend Dr. Richard S Lee of Newport Orthopedic Institute (spine). I found Dr. Lee to be very uninterested in my situation, not engaging and did not provide basic answers to my questions about my back issue. I asked many questions which he simply refused to answer, or if he did answer, many times they were 1-word answers. To me this was very disconcerting. Another reviewer posted a comment that Dr. Lee was "rude and impatient". I concur. My comments are based on seeing Dr. Lee twice. Working with a good doctor to me is one who you develop a caring and healthy doctor-patient relationship. My rating for Dr. Richard Lee at NOI is a 1 star.

Dr. Lee kept me waiting 90 minutes. I thought he was Disrespectful and Arrogant. He really had little to say regarding my neck issues but had a lot to say about other well respected doctors on my team. After telling me how he disagrees he neglected to tell me why. He did not inspire confidence. I would not recommend this doctor...

I would give him negative stars if I could. I drove down from Thousand Oaks and was sitting in the car for 3 hours, which for those of us with 3 herniated disc know is very unpleasant. Then when I get there, they tell me that it was the wrong office and I would have to reschedule. The scheduler called him and he was "busy". Doesn't matter how good a doctor is, if they don't have any empathy for their patients.

Dr. Lee and his team have been excellent! Thorough, patient, and most importantly highly skilled. I was initially terrified of the procedure. But Dr. Lee patiently explained it to me several times and his coordinator, Kim, also spent time setting me up with the right resources. I had fusion of my L4, L5, and S1 from the back and front. I'll admit I didn't feel great the next day, but I quickly improved and left the hospital after 3 nights without even using a walker. I would recommend Dr. Lee.

Unfortunately, Dr. Lee sent me away several times minimizing my concerns. I saw another doctor and found that there was a problem on an MRI study. He may be good surgically, but not thoughtful diagnostically. It's as though he relies solely on MRI to diagnose. The only problem is if he doesn't think you need an MRI, then how do you get a proper diagnosis? Sadly, I believe he is a myopic diagnostician.

Dr Lee had a very clear plan for my surgery right off the bat. He made me feel confident that he would be able to fix my back issue. The surgery went very well and was successful. I didn't know that he was going to use staples instead of sutures but aside from that it went just as he said it would. Be advised though...you will not be seen at your actual appointed time. I waited almost an hour and a half one day. No apology or thanks for waiting. Desk staff could be friendlier.
