Dr. Fermelia's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Fermelia "Dr. Fermelia was born and raised in Wyoming in Rock Springs in the southwest corner, the grandson of coal mining grandfathers. His father was a dentist in that community for many years. Dr. F went to the University of Wyoming for a Bachelor of Arts, and to the Uniersity of Utah to Medical school. Residency was in Dallas Texas at the Parkland Hospital, also known as the University of Texas Southwestern. Dr. Fermelia started and remained in practice in Cheyenne. In Cheyenne, Dr. Fermelia developed a vascular surgery program, a breast care program, a trauma program and a bariatric program. He know joins Dr. Rick Windle in Nebraska, where Dr. Windle has enjoyed an excellent reputation as a respected and talented general surgeon. Dr. Fermelia has a 24 year post residency experience and expertise in general surgery, a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal / gastrointestinal contents including esophagus, stomach, spleen, small bowel, colon, appendix, liver, pancreas, hemorrhoids, gallbladder and bile ducts. General Surgeons also deal with diseases involving the skin, breast, cancer, soft tissue, trauma, and hernias. Dr. Fermelia's primary interest is in complex abdominal laparoscopic surgery. His interests and expertise include laparoscopic heartburn surgery, stomach, gallbladder and bile ducts, bariatric, colorectal, hemorrhoid, and appendix. Dr Fermelia has extensive experience in inguinal and abdominal wall hernia surgery, both laparoscopic and open. Breast surgery for both benign and malignant breast disease as well as other cancer surgeries remain an interest. Dr. F was one of the first surgeons in Wyoming to perform breast stereotactic biopsy, incorporate breast ultrasound into surgical practice, and perform sentinel lymph node biopsy. Dr. Fermelia would be pleased to have patients make an appointment to have a "lump or bump" or skin lesion removed in the office or in the operating room. Dr. Fermelia likes to offer the best of technology to patients, which includes the option of having hemorrhoid treatments as an outpatient in the form of infrared therapy. This is a painless technique that can be a great additional option to rubber banding techniques and conventional hemorrhoid surgery. Dr. Fermelia practiced vascular surgery for 10 years before developing a comprehensive laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery program. Dr. Fermelia and his then partners developed the first bariatric surgery program in Wyoming. As the remaining bariatric surgeon in Wyoming, both Dr. Fermelia and the program he developed had a "Centers of Excellence" verification initially from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and then ultimately from the MSAQIP national centers / surgeon of excellence programs. Dr. Fermelia is interested in reoperative bariatric surgery and helping patients maximize results of bariatric surgery, regardless of who performed the original surgery. Dr. Fermelia is an experienced acute care general surgeon and trauma surgeon. Starting in 2001, Dr. Fermelia lead the effort to successfully develop and maintain a Level II American College of Surgeons Trauma Center from its inception and practiced in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care his entire career. He served as the trauma medical director for 16 years. Personal: Dr. Fermelia is married to Shannon (27 years), who is an attorney and has two children, Lex (16) and Sadie (20). Dr. Fermelia enjoys swimming, golf, playing music, church activities, boating, snow skiing and especially spending time with his family. Dr. Fermelia enjoys surgical medical mission work in Haiti. His wife and daughter have joined him for these adventures in Haiti."

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Fermelia "Interacting with and helping patients and their family are my favorite part of being a surgeon.  I will go out of my way to make the process of surgery and the recovery as easy and smooth as I can.  There can be some obstacles sometime including insurance coverage, surgical scheduling, getting back to work, etc, but you have my word I will do my best to minimize it.  I will be your advocate.  I am a careful and comprehensive communicator, and I like to make sure patients and their families are fully informed about their problems, what they can expect around surgery and the recovery period.  I will literally spend as much time as you need to make sure your questions are answered.  I do not use a advanced practice provider, nurse practitioner, PA or other intermediary.  You will talk to me personally and I hope to get to know you and your familypersonally.  I will be literally immediately available to you both before, during and after your recovery."
