A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he received his Medical Degree from the State Uiversity of Rio de Janeiro School of Medicine. He did his internship at the Washington Hospital Center, an affiliated hospital to George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was then involved for one year in General and Ophthalmic Pathology at the University of Mississippi medical Center. At Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, he received his Residency Training in Ophthalmology and further pursued a Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous.. He was then granted a Research Fellowship sponsored by the Research to Prevent Blindness Foundation, to advance his interest in the field of the Retina and Vitreous. Dr. Akstein studied with Dr. Charles Casebeer, a pioneer in the surgical correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism, and he has performed numerous microscopic refractive surgical procedures.
