Dr. Katira, one of the few female ophthalmologists practicing full-time in the entire Washington metropolitan area, has fashioned a formidable professional career since graduating summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY-Buffalo) Honors Program where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She chose to continue at SUNY-Buffalo for medical school and earned a Doctor of Medicine degree with the Dean's Letter of Commendation for Clinical Excellence while also being presented with the Dr. E.J. Weisenheimer Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology. Her training continued with an internship in General Surgery and a residency in Ophthalmology—both at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago—where she served as Chief Resident. She then completed a two-year Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery with Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center and The Retina Group of Washington. Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 2005, Dr. Katira is licensed in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. She has affiliations with Washington Hospital Center, Georgetown University Hospital, Virginia Hospital Center, Silver Spring Ophthalmology Center and Friendship Surgery Center. In keeping with her commitment to actively support the local ophthalmology community, she serves as the D.C. representative for the American Academy of Ophthalmology Council while also maintaining membership in several other professional societies and organizations. She is also a former president of the Washington DC Ophthalmic Society. Dr. Katira enjoys participating regularly in teaching and clinical research, and has contributed to various publications and made presentations to the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the Association for Research and Vision In Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision. She currently serves on the teaching faculty for the Ophthalmology Residency program at Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital. She has been a reviewer of publications for the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Retina Journaland has received several honors for her outstanding work. When she's not helping patients, Dr. Katira spends much of her personal time volunteering to help those less fortunate. Over the years, she has spent more than 500 hours working with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity and the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps.
