Dr. Bourey is a member of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at St. Louis University where he attends both endocrinology and sleep medicine clinics. Dr. Bourey attended medical school at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He undertook internship in surgery and medicine at Miriam Hospital/Brown University, residency in Internal Medicine at Southern Illinois University, and fellowships in both applied physiology (exercise physiology) and endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Washington University in St. Louis. He spent 10 years in general internal medicine, has had extensive experience in emergency medicine, and has had full time faculty positions at Washington University in St. Louis and University of Toledo, where he served as chief of endocrinology, medical director for diabetes education, head of the inpatient glucose control service, and medical director of the sleep laboratory. In 1994, Dr. Bourey observed a connection between poor sleep and high morning blood sugars in diabetes. He subsequently undertook additional training and study in sleep medicine, which he felt represented a "back door" to study of brain and central nervous system control of metabolism. Current research focuses on menopausal insomnia and effects of disrupted sleep on development of metabolic syndrome.
