For me, medicine is ministry. Palliative Care is an interdisciplinary, holistic approach to improve symptoms of severe chronic diseases. Often used in terminal illness (hospice type of palliative care), it can also (without hospice) be added to the management of any severe, chronic disease, at any point. It can be combined with efforts at curative therapy (prior to hospice) or focus totally on symptom management and enhanced quality of life. Good palliative care, including hospice care, not only improves quality of life but also extends life in most instances. We utilize the concept of Total Pain. Total pain can be physical pain but can also be anything that detracts from quality of life: emotional and spiritual issues, breathlessness, nausea, sleep issues as well as physical pain.
