Care Philosophy

Our practice provides individualized care to patients who have or are suspected to have disorders of the endocrine system or disorders of metabolism. Such conditions include thyroid disorders, diabetes, testosterone deficiency, adrenal disorders, pituitary disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, parathyroid disorders, osteoporosis, obesity, metabolic syndrome, hormonally-induced hair loss, and menstrual disorders.

We are a private practice setting, with examination rooms, office laboratory, and a consultation room.

The office is staffed by an office manager and two medical assistants. All three are full-time employees and are expert phlebotomists (blood drawing).

Our staff is dedicated to providing the highest quality of service in a kind and caring manner.

Initial consultations and follow-up visits are scheduled with a minimum waiting time and often can be arranged for same day service.

Biography

Dr. Felig was born in New York City. He received his undergraduate education at Princeton University, from which he graduated magna cum laude. He then attended the Yale University School of Medicine, where he was awarded the Anatomy Prize and the Campbell Prize for highest standing in the examinations of the course. Following medical school, Dr. Felig did his residency at the Yale/New Haven Hospital, where he rose to be Chief Resident in Medicine. Dr. Felig received his training in Endocrinology at the Harvard Medical School Elliott P. Joslin Research Laboratory and at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Felig also served two years in the United States Air Force in the rank of captain. He performed his military service at the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Base, where he was in charge of a research program on the effects of a pure oxygen environment. At that time, U.S. spacecraft used a pure oxygen environment whose safety was the subject of research and publications by Dr. Felig. Following his training, Dr. Felig joined the faculty of the Yale University School of Medicine as an assistant professor and rose to full professorship. Dr. Felig served as Chief of Endocrinology at Yale and Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine. While at Yale, Dr. Felig headed a research team whose focus was on glucose (sugar) metabolism. The team was the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of an insulin pump in the management of type I diabetes mellitus. Dr. Felig also did research on changes in glucose metabolism in type II diabetes and in obesity. Dr. Felig's research endeavors have resulted in over 260 publications, consisting of original articles, reviews and book chapters. Dr. Felig has been Editor-in-Chief of the textbook, Endocrinology and Metabolism, published by the McGraw Hill book company. This textbook has gone through four editions and has been translated into Spanish, Italian and Russian. Dr. Felig started his private practice of Endocrinology in New York City in 1987. Since that time, he has provided service to over 20,000 patients with a variety of endocrine disorders. Dr. Felig's expertise and accomplishments as a practicing endocrinologist have been recognized by his having been listed in New York Magazine's "Best Doctors" list on thirteen separate occasions. He has also been recognized with awards as a "most compassionate doctor" and by repeated listings by "Best Doctors of America," and by recognition as an outstanding endocrinologist by the Consumer's Research Council. Dr. Felig's other awards and distinctions include past presidency of the Yale chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, Honor Medical Society, the Commendation Medal of the United States Air Force for "distinguished and meritorious service as a research investigator," the American College of Physicians Teaching and Research Scholar Award, Honorary Doctor of Medicine from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, the Lilly Award from the American Diabetes Association, the Mary Jane Kugel Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the Alverenga Prize of the Swedish Medical Society for Research of Outstanding Scientific Merit, the Charles Best Lectureship of the Toronto Diabetes Association, the Jean Claude Kellion Lectureship of the Australian Diabetes Association, the American Medical Writers Association Medical Book Award for the textbook Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Alpha Omega Alpha Lectureship at the Ohio State University School of Medicine, the Ropheh Award (Distinguished Physician Award) of the Shaare Zedek Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel, and the Medic Award of the Rachmiel Levine Diabetes Center at New York Medical College.     Each new patient consultation involves a detailed history and physical examination by Dr. Felig, laboratory studies performed in our office laboratory and in an accredited outside medical laboratory, a detailed discussion of these findings and a plan of treatment by Dr. Felig, and a comprehensive written consultation report provided to each patient and, where appropriate, to his or her referring physician.

    Follow-up appointments are scheduled as appropriate for ongoing care.

    Dr. Felig is affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital and with the Mount Sinai/Beth Israel Hospital.
