Dr. Paul Hahn, MD
Dr Paul Hahn returned home to the northeast to join NJRetina in 2016. He grew up in New York City and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in Biochemical Sciences. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both ophthalmologists, he completed his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was sponsored by the National Institute of Health for completion of his MD along with a PhD degree in molecular pharmacology investigating novel treatment pathways for dry age-related macular degeneration. Dr Hahn completed his ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at Duke University. After completion of his fellowship, Dr Hahn remained at Duke University as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology for almost 4 years, gaining experience in managing the range of routine conditions and the most complex of referred complications. He developed an interest in next-generation treatments and cutting edge technologies and was the founder and director of the Duke Center for Artificial and Regenerative Vision. Dr Hahn was the surgeon who implanted the first Argus II "bionic eye" in the Southeast, restoring vision to an individual with total blindness as was captured nationally and internationally in the popular media. Watch the video here. Dr Hahn has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He has served as principal investigator for multiple clinical trials. He has been invited to lecture at numerous national and international meetings on topics including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, ocular imaging, and advanced surgical techniques. He has been invited to supervise and provide expert guidance for complex surgeries in the United States and internationally. He has maintained active roles as a consultant and advisory board member for major surgical and therapeutic companies. He serves on the editorial board of multiple ophthalmic journals and is a serving member of the American Society of Retina Specialists – Research and Safety in Therapeutics Committee. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious honors and awards for excellence in ophthalmology research, receiving the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Resident Award, Ronald G. Michels Foundation Fellowship, the Heed Foundation Fellowship, and the American Society of Retinal Specialists Honor Award.
