Dr. Hook's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Hook "After graduating college with a Master's degree in biochemistry, Dr. Patrick Hook started off working in medical research at a biotechnology company. However, the idea of working directly with patients always intrigued him, so he chose to go to medical school. "Considering my science and research background it felt like the next logical step," he explains. "I was really excited about the opportunity to develop long-term relationships with patients, instead of working in a laboratory environment." Dr. Hook is a rheumatologist, a doctor who treats rheumatic illnesses including problems with the joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles. "In Rheumatology there are many conditions that are rare and difficult to diagnose. I think this is one of the things that attracted me to the field of Rheumatology. It's a challenging field, but one that can be very rewarding, especially when you are able to provide patient care over the long-term." According to Dr. Hook, new research is leading to innovative treatments for diseases that were not formerly well understood. "It seems like every time you turn around there are new potential treatment options. There is ongoing research focused on scleroderma, vasculitis and other conditions that have not had effective therapies in the past. This makes it a very exciting time to be a rheumatologist." In his practice at Reliant, Dr. Hook will be utilizing ultrasound technology as a tool to improve patient care. "One of the emerging diagnostic tools in Rheumatology is musculoskeletal ultrasound. When I was at Boston Medical Center I trained with one of the leaders in this field. This type of ultrasound is a scan of the bones and tissue. It can diagnose many problems including rotator-cuff injuries, knee effusions, and active inflammation in a swollen joint. The use of ultrasound can improve the accuracy of injection and aspiration techniques with less risk of complications. It can really enhance patient care." Dr. Hook, who grew up in a rural area in Western Pennsylvania, loves to be outdoors in his free time. He enjoys golfing, snowboarding, hiking and running. He played basketball in college and is an avid sports fan."
