Dr. Michael L. Savitt, MD

Dr. Michael L. Savitt, MD

Ophthalmology | Male | 54 years old

I'm a glaucoma specialist, so my practice is primarily patients - who've been referred by other ophthalmologists or optometrists - who have glaucoma and may be slightly more complicated than the average glaucoma patients. So they will ask me for my advice or to assume care of the patient. One of the most common fears that patients have, in general, is of going blind. There have been studies that have looked at this, and when people hear that they have glaucoma, I think a lot of patients assume that that means that they will go blind. So that's the first fear that we need to address in most patients - is that although glaucoma is not curable, it's definitely treatable. And it does require though, a long relationship, basically for the rest of the patient's life. And that's really what my job is - in the beginning especially - is patient education, to develop that kind of relationship so that the patient can more effectively participate in their care and more effectively treat their disease.Read more
