Dr. Michael Potter is a fellowship trained and board certified Sports Medicine physician practicing in the Newport News and Williamsburg areas of Virginia. He practices Sports Medicine and Musculoskeletal Medicine with a broad focus on the comprehensive needs of the patient. Dr. Potter completed his undergraduate studies at University of Virginia, where he received a BA in Biology. Upon completion of his studies at UVA, he returned home to Texas to attend medical school at Texas A&M College of Medicine. Dr. Potter later completed his Family Practice Residency at Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News, VA through the Medical College of Virginia. He then completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Potter moved to Charlotte, NC from 2000-2002. There, he served as a team physician for UNCC. He returned to Virginia in 2002 when he joined TPMG, and has been practicing here since. He currently practices with TPMG Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine in Newport News and Williamsburg, VA, and is the head team physician for the College of William & Mary. Since becoming a physician, Dr. Potter has worked with athletes of all levels, including the College of William & Mary for the past 11 years. His Sports Medicine experience also includes working with Christopher Newport University, Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina Charlotte, University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Golden Gloves Boxing, as well as other professional athletes. Dr. Potter's focus is not only on the collegiate and professional athlete. He is currently working with the Newport News and Williamsburg Public School Systems Athletic Departments as a consulting physician. He has also served as the Sports Medicine Director for Bon Secours Health Systems of Hampton Roads from 2007-2009. In addition to his practice of medicine, Dr. Potter lectures throughout the country on a variety of Sports Medicine topics, is a Clinical Professor with VCU working with Residents and students, and has been published in textbooks, research and lay journals. In his "free" time, Dr. Potter enjoys coaching soccer, basketball, running 5Ks, half marathons, marathons and triathlons. First, and always foremost in his life, is his love for his wife, Andrea, three daughters and his faith. As if not on enough sidelines in his practice, he and Andrea are often on the sidelines at one of their daughter's soccer, basketball, dance or cheerleading events. Dr. Potter's love for his family, faith, Newport News and Williamsburg communities and his patients is always apparent, and shows in his dedication to all of the above.
