Born and raised in the Central San Joaquin Valley, Michael Maruyama grew up on a small farm in Reedley, California. He left the Valley in 1967 to attend the University of Southern California on an academic scholarship, graduating in 1971. Dr. Maruyama received his MD in 1974 while at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, completing his surgical training at LA County USC Medical Center in 1980. "As surgeons we are often faced with difficult clinical decisions. But when I extrapolate the patient as a close member of my family, these decisions become quite clear," Dr. Maruyama says.
