This content was provided by Dr. Kosmo "Dr Kosmo was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. He received his bachelor's degree in Chemistry at Boston College. His Medical Degree was obtained from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979. Following his marriage to Stephanie and a cross-country honeymoon celebration, he pursued his Internal Medicine residency, followed by Hematology and Oncology Fellowships at Naval Hospital San Diego. Dr Kosmo became triple-board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology, completing his training in 1986. He continued as staff physician and clinical instructor for the medicine residency and heme/onc fellowship training programs until 1991. He was also an Associate Clinical Professor in medicine for the UCSD Medical School clinical teaching program. While on active duty, Dr Kosmo was also assigned to the Western Pacific aboard USS Tarawa and USS Tripoli. These military tours provided both memorable and enriching experiences, never to be forgotten. Following active duty, Dr Kosmo remained with the Military Naval Reserves as instructor for the Medicine Residency and Hematology/Oncology Fellowship programs until retirement as Captain, USNR in May 2000. In 1991 Dr Kosmo joined Southwest Cancer Care as a community Hematology/Oncology physician in San Diego North County where he continues to practice. Throughout his years in hematology/oncology, he has participated as Principle Investigator in several clinical research programs. He has memberships with the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and San Diego Medical Society. Community service has included director of medical tumor boards at Palomar and Fallbrook Hospitals, prior medical director for Horizon Hospice, member of the Palomar Health Cancer Committee, and member of the American Cancer Society. Dr Kosmo was recently honored as 2011 Physician of the Year by the Medical Oncology Unit of Palomar Hospital. Through the years, Dr Kosmo has had many interests including the arts, swimming, skiing, gardening, and just making bread. But the best part of his day is spending time with Stephanie, which is further enhanced by time with his two grown children, Christopher and Laura, who are both pursuing professional careers. As per Dr Kosmo, "Health is so precious, and the diagnosis of cancer can be devastating. Rendering an effective treatment is essential, further enhanced by maintaining quality of life with best supportive care. But honest communication which ensures a patient's best understanding of the disease process ultimately enables emotional healing.""

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Kosmo "The Physicians and staff at California Cancer Associates for Research & Excellence Inc dedicated to one goal – providing the highest quality care for our patients. Our approach is based on our belief that patients do best when they receive comprehensive care with medical specialists and support staff working together on their behalf. We believe that our patients need to have access to the latest research, technologies, treatment programs and drug therapies. We believe that support groups, psychosocial counseling and complimentary programs can improve quality of life for many patients. And we believe that to beat cancer, we must treat more than the disease itself. We must treat the whole person by being responsive to how cancer impacts all aspects of their lives."

I was referred to Dr. Kosmo by my surgeon. I had a double mastectomy in June. I felt Dr. Kosmo was very kind and explained my prognosis well. He took into consideration my desires for treatment and was willing to work with me . The nurse I had was very nice and the M.A. to Dr. Kosmo, Maryann was very helpful and kind also. Would totally recommend this Doctor.
