Dr. Kessler's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Kessler "Not all patients who come to my office require surgery. However, they all require well thought out, respectful, and individualized care. During the course of an office visit, we will come to understand the nature of their problem or injury, its anatomic basis, and its effect on the individual's activities. Nonoperative treatment is often sufficient and is begun at that first office visit. When surgery is indicated, it is tailored to the individual, their underlying diagnosis, and the demands of their daily lives. Maximizing function, minimizing recovery time, and assuring a durable reconstruction remain the goals for all of my patients whether they be avid gardeners, or professional athletes."

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Kessler "Michael W. Kessler, MD MPH, is the Chief of Hand and Elbow Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.  A highly skilled and board-certified surgeon, he completed his residency at North Shore/LIJ in New Hyde Park, NY. He then completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the Philadelphia Hand Center and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he gained specialized training in the surgical and nonsurgical management of various hand and upper extremity conditions.

Dr. Kessler has cared for a variety of professional sports organizations, including the New Jersey Devils, Assoc. of Tennis Professionals, Philadelphia Phillies and Flyers. Dr. Kessler currently is the hand surgeon for the Georgetown University Athletic Department and DC United.

Dr. Kessler has received multiple awards for his research, including the prestigious Boyes Award from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.  Dr. Kessler was named a "Top Doctor" by Washingtonian Magazine in 2015, 2016, and 2017."

Dr. Kessler did a great job repairing my knees when I was admitted to MSGU Hospital through the Emergency Department -- even though that was not his specialty. This Fall, I went back to see him on a hand-related matter and received full and complete examination and diagnosis. Dr. Kessler was very...more

I'm thankful to have met and been treated by Dr. Kessler, who I first saw as an emergency walk-in patient the day before Thanksgiving. After 2 previous lessthen successful surgeries performed by other Dr.'s, I was not extremely thrilled at first to meet the man who'd be performing my 3rd surgery. My elbow was in a lot of pain, deformed from previous surgeries, and I have heard it all. But, regardless, I gave Dr. Kessler a chance...more
