Dr. Hovey's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Hovey "Having been born in Omaha and raised in Council Bluffs, Dr. Hovey has a longterm relationship with the Metro area. He is the oldest of seven children. His father is a retired computer programmer for Union Pacific Railroad and his mother is a retired nurse. His entire family resides in the Omaha area. Growing up, Dr. Hovey loved working with his hands. He developed a strong interest in mechanical and electrical devices. He sought out resources and progressively learned to work on bikes, radios, motorcycles, cars, and computers. After graduating from Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, Dr. Hovey spent time at Iowa State University majoring in Electrical Engineering before deciding to enlist in the Iowa Army National Guard. He enjoyed the physical and mental challenges of Army basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. Army advanced training was undertaken at Fort Gordon, GA where Dr Hovey finished as an Honor Graduate. Upon returning home from Army training, he attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha to major in Electrical Engineering Technology. It was during his time at UNO that Dr Hovey started to reconsider his career choice. He began to have a keen interest in human physiology and infectious diseases. While he enjoyed the challenges of engineering, he decided to pursue a degree in chemistry in preparation for applying to medical school. He was continuously a member of the Dean's List. During his undergraduate studies, in addition to taking heavy course load and remaining in the Army National Guard, Dr Hovey worked full time at a local lumberyard in customer service, driving a forklift, and even driving a commercial lumber truck. His strong work ethic and drive to succeed kept him focused on his goals. In anticipation of entering medical school, Dr. Hovey applied for and won a Health Professions Scholarship through the United States Air Force. He had already attained the rank of sergeant in the Army and was now commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. Dr. Hovey attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine where his experience and dexterity immediately made him gravitate towards surgery. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Hovey completed an internship in general surgery at Creighton University. The Air Force then sent him to train as a Flight Surgeon and he spent 2 years at McConnell AFB, KS in that capacity. He twice deployed to the desert of Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch. He was the recipient of numerous military honors, ribbons, and awards. After his time as a flight surgeon, Dr Hovey spent four years in the general surgery residency program at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. He developed expertise in many facets of surgery, but minimally invasive surgery and weight loss surgery became his main interest. Upon completion of surgical residency, Dr Hovey finished his commitment to the Air Force by spending 2 years as a surgeon at Sheppard AFB, TX. Prior to his Honorable Discharge, he had attained the rank of Major. Wishing to return home to Omaha, Dr. Hovey entered into private practice specializing in general surgery, minimally invasive/laparoscopic surgery, and weight loss surgery. He was twice elected the Chief of the Department of Surgery at CHI Immanuel Medical Center. After 10 years in private practice, in 2016 Dr. Hovey transitioned to an employee of CHI Health and undertook a new challenge as Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine. He is responsible for teaching surgical practice to medical students and surgical residents. In his free time, Dr. Hovey likes to spend time with his wife and kids. He is an avid outdoorsman, loves to fish and bird hunt. He still likes to work on electronics, cars, motorcycles, etc and is especially enjoying seeing his children develop these skills as well."

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Hovey "You put your trust in a surgeon and I take that responsibility very seriously. I strive to provide pre-operative education in a manner every patient can understand. I believe all patients should be given the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Surgeons have the unique ability to actually cure diseases rather than just treating them with medicine. Seeing my weight loss patients lead happier and healthier lives after surgery is especially gratifying."
