Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.

Dr. Crabtree says...

The older of two sons, Dr. Michael Crabtree was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. Six years later, the Crabtree family picked up and moved to Hot Springs, where his father, a General Surgeon, opened a small clinic in a time where house calls were still not considered unusual. His mother, a Registered Nurse, not only managed the clinic, but also helped her husband take care of their patients. In 1999, the Crabtree family uprooted themselves and settled in Orange County, California where his father continued his medical career with Kaiser Permanente and his mother with various hospitals. His parent's day to day delivery of care to those in need, seasoned with a foundation of Southern Hospitality, embodied the atmosphere for Dr. Crabtree's medical inspiration.

The Crabtree home cultivated ingenuity and strong values, backed by a steady emphasis on academic excellence. His mother fostered a spirit of dedication to upholding values. "Mom wouldn't let me miss out on anything she felt was important for character development," Dr. Crabtree had laughed. "Once my dad and I got stuck on Lake Hamilton in our sailboat because the wind stopped. To keep me from being late to my Boy Scout meeting, mom boated up and down that lake in the ole' party barge until she found us, lassoed the bow, and towed us back home so I wouldn't be late... we made it to the meeting with 5 minutes to spare!" His father was the adventurous scholar, mesmerizing his sons with telescopes glorified with mind-blowing stories of vast galaxies, elaborate rope and pulley animal traps that only caught himself, and demonstrations of Bernoulli's principle on an airplane wing he built out of toilet paper. The combination of his parent's character traits proved to be the meat and potatoes of Dr. Crabtree's professional life. He became a physician captivated by the science of medicine. Yet he never lost sight of the values he acquired from church, scouts, and family.

In high school, Dr. Crabtree sought out unique challenges that underscored character growth, swimming for the Servite Friars (the butterfly being his winning stroke), playing the clarinet for his high school band, and earning the Eagle Scout Rank with the Boy Scouts of America. By the time he started college at the University of California at Irvine (UCI), Dr. Crabtree was beginning to demonstrate a predilection for science, finding comfort in the conclusions established by the scientific method. Although involved with several activities, Dr. Crabtree was becoming more and more interested in health care as he volunteered at the UCI Medical Center and Student Health Center, and shadowed his father at Kaiser Permanente.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences, Dr. Crabtree was accepted into Ross University School of Medicine where he spent two years of rigorous study on the Commonwealth of Dominica in the West Indies. "There were few distractions on this small island," Dr. Crabtree fondly reminisced. "With only a mountain and a beach for fun, nothing else stood in the way of countless hours of unadulterated study. Being able to concentrate solely on my books gave me a strong foundation in medical science." Having mastered the science of medicine, it was time for Dr. Crabtree to imbibe the art of it at various Ross University affiliated clinics across America, starting first in Miami, Florida, moving to Jamaica and Brooklyn, New York, and finally completing his training at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, California. In his final year, he married his college sweetheart and graduated in the top 5% of his class with Highest Honors at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Right away Dr. Crabtree started his Anesthesiology Internship and Residency at his first pick National Residency Match Program: the University of New Mexico. After completing his Pain Fellowship, Dr. Crabtree was recruited by the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Albuquerque, where he continues to humbly serve our country's finest.
