Dr. Brown and his colleagues at the Center for Colon and Digestive Disease are all board certified in the practice of gastroenterology.  Gastroenterology is a subspecialty of internal medicine which is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract including especially the esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon as well as the intra-abdominal organs which includes the liver and pancreas in particular.  Dr. Brown has pursued a career in medicine because of his interest in science as well as his concern to help people improve their health.  Dr. Brown is determined to assist his patients discover the underlying cause for their gastrointestinal disorders and obtain the most appropriate therapy.

Dr. Brown says...

Michael W. Brown majored in chemistry at the University of Alabama graduating magna cum laude in 1975 and was invited into the Phi Beta Kappa Society.  He then went on to attain his doctorate in medicine at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.  Dr. Brown completed his testing before the National Board of Medical Examiners in the 99th percentile.  He pursued his internship and internal medicine residency training at the University of Wisconsin.  He did his postdoctorate studies in gastroenterology at the University of Texas.  He did pursue extra emphasis in hepatology through a National Institute of Health grant under the direction of Dr. Steven Schenker, then president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.  He was honored to become a fellow of the American College of Medicine in 1992 and was subsequently elected to be a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology in 1993.  Dr. Brown is a clinical associate professor with the UAB School of Medicine.  His private practice is with the Center for Colon and Digestive Disease with office locations in Huntsville and Madison Alabama.  He serves as a staff physician at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville.

Dr. Brown has received university research level fellowship training in the techniques and procedures of gastroenterology.  His specific training included gastroscopy, ERCP, laparoscopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy and esophageal manometry.  Of particular importance with the current concerns regarding cost effective healthcare, his adenoma detection rate at colonoscopy exceeds the national standard of care.
