Dr. Abeles' bio

This content was provided by Dr. Abeles "Micha Abeles is a well-known rheumatologist based in Meriden, Connecticut. He is a highly experienced medical professional -- board certified in both rheumatology and internal medicine for over four decades. Micha Abeles has garnered much recognition and praise by doctors and other healthcare professionals nationwide for his groundbreaking discoveries and research into the realm of rheumatology, lupus and fibromyalgia. Micha Abeles got his start in the medical field while he was serving in the U.S. Army. During his time in the force, Micha served as a major and chief of the outpatient department at Ft. Monroe, Virginia. He received recognition and praise for his outstanding clinical skills, which eventually inspired him to pursue a career in rheumatology. After leaving the army in 1976, Micha started a fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Proving himself an effective researcher and instructor, within two years Micha Abeles had been made an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology. Alongside his work as a faculty member, Micha Abeles coordinated the John Dempsey Hospital clinical clerkship program and worked as the chief of the Burgdorf Rheumatology Clinic. In 1980, he established a part-time private practice, treating patients as a rheumatologist, where he still continues his practice today. In 1986, Micha Abeles became an associate professor of medicine, and was named associate director of the University of Connecticut Multipurpose Arthritis Center. He researched a variety of rheumatological conditions, and performed numerous clinical trials of new treatments that lead to the development of significant medications that are still in use today. In addition to his research, Micha Abeles was associate director of an NIH funded Multipurpose Arthritis Center for 12 years, as well as director of the rheumatology clinical practice for the University of Connecticut Health Center. He became a full professor in 2010, and served as chief of the division of rheumatology from 2007 to 2016. Not only was Micha Abeles busy with his plethora of research findings and serving on editorial and advisement boards, but he was busy coaching fencing as well. Micha was an Ivy-league fencer back in his days as a Cornell student, and continued his love for fencing through coaching the fencing team at the University of Connecticut. Although Micha Abeles retired from teaching in 2016, his research papers, letters and editorials show he was a pilot in the field of rheumatology. Over his career, Micha Abeles presented over 80 abstracts in regional and national meetings, authored numerous book chapters, and has authored or co-authored over 50 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. A few of the big discoveries Micha and his co-authors made were "Dermatomyositis and Hodgkin's Disease," "Sequential Daily Relations of Sleep, Pain Intensity, and Attention to Pain Among Women with Fibromyalgia," and "Methods used by Urban Low-income Minorities to Care for Their Arthritis: A Descriptive Atudy." Currently, Micha Abeles works full-time in his own private practice. He has been voted Top Doctor in Connecticut for over two decades now, in addition to being listed as Best Doctor and Castle Connolly top doctor for several years. Micha Abeles also serves on the editorial boards of two academic journals as a respected expert in rheumatology with specialized expertise in fibromyalgia and lupus."
