I was very late in getting my first colonoscopy (age 64) and they removed a very large polyp (along with several smaller ones) that the pathology report said was pre-cancerous. The pathologists also said there might be cancer in the colon at the site of the polyp. The recommendation was to have a colon resection. I was referred to Dr. Schultzel's practice and am very glad I was. He and his team were really fantastic. He communicated clearly what he saw as the options and recommended robotic surgery to remove a small section of the colon. He explained the procedure clearly and in detail and answered all of my questions. His team shepherded me through the entire process. He/they explained what the surgical process would most likely entail (while indicating things vary) and it turned out pretty much exactly as they outlined. They have also been really great with the follow-up. I highly recommend Dr. Schultzel and his team.

I have been suffering from rectal bleeding off and on and it became worse in mid-2020. Dr. Matthew Schultzel is the doctor I consulted. Consultation with his PA Katelyn Harding went very well while she asked questions about my medical history. The evaluation conducted afterwards by Dr. Schultzel was quick and painless, after which he explained the options I had to correct my situation. He suggested a more conventional method where I had to apply a compounded cream to mitigate the fissure or a surgery. I chose the conventional method first and he explained that if that did not work that he will perform surgery. Dr. Schultzel is a natural communicator, he listens attentively and shares his ideas in a clear and logical manner. He maintained eye contact and responded to all my questions appropriately. He ended up performing surgery, my bleeding has stopped and now my quality of life has vastly improved. His health care team is at the top of their game to make sure their patients get well!

I wish I’d gone to Dr. Schultzel for my hernia surgery the first time. He is clearly the better surgeon and his actions show he cares about his patients. Instead, I went to UCSD. After the initial visit/sales pitch, I did not see my surgeon again. At each of my two post-ops, some other doctor told me the bulge would go away or it was normal. The bulge got bigger until it became undeniable that the surgeon whiffed and I would need a second surgery. I knew the odds got worse each time. I was scared. A friend referred me to Dr. Schultzel. The first visit was night-and-day different. He answered all of my questions. He explained exactly what would happen. He didn’t shy away from hard questions or explaining the risks. Dr. Schultzel visited with me and my wife right before the surgery. He visited with my wife immediately afterwards. He visited with me when I woke up. And I saw him at all three of my follow up visits. I’m completely healed and active again.

Dr. Schultzel's concern for my health has been his priority since my first visit /exam. He ordered labs & tests confirming his diagnoses but also addressed other concerns based on my history as a recovering alcoholic, making sure all my organs were healthy before scheduling a much-needed surgery to correct a very painful hernia. His scheduling nurse, Emily, provided me with many date choices, a complete package of what to expect with preparation and after-care instructions and provided excellent support from beginning to end. Amidst a pandemic, Dr. Schultzel and Scripps La Jolla allowed my surgery to take place with much-appreciated extreme safety protocol. His nursing and surgery team provided first-class care and I knew I was in good hands, especially due to positive staff comments about Dr. Schultzel's experience and skills. My recovery went well, I able to get back to the office within a week resumed normal activities in about 6 weeks. Highly Recommended!

Dr. Schultzel guided me through 2 surgeries with expertise, professionalism and a compassion that is often absent in the bedside manner of surgeons. He even took my call on a Sunday to put my mind at ease during recovery. In colorectal surgery, doctors have to "poke and prod" in areas that are normally very private and sensitive. Dr. Schultzel handled all of this quickly and professionally.. but also kindly. At appointments, I never felt rushed and my questions were always answered fully and without the sense one often gets when speaking with a doctor that the question is stupid or that the doctor has something more important to do just then. I am now fully recovered from both surgeries and I couldn't be happier with the results. My quality of life has dramatically improved as a result of Dr. Schultzel's fine work. I will recommend him without hesitation to friends, family and anyone else that needs a colorectal surgeon.

I recently had surgery performed by Dr. Schultzel. It was a potentially painful surgery (hemorrhoids) and I have to say that I was very impressed all along the way. First off, at my initial visit, Dr. Schultzel was very communicative as well as very gentle, which was appreciated. Emily, the scheduler, really did a great job along with the rest of the staff in making sure that I had all that I needed prior to the surgery. They arranged pre-surgical testing and provide me with clear guidance. Post-surgical instructions were also excellent as was all follow-up. I'm a toxicologist so I'm not unfamiliar with medical issues. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Dr. Schultzel and don't hesitate to recommend him and his staff highly.

AMAZING! Our family feels extremely fortunate to have found Dr. Shultzel. He has performed hernia repair surgery on both my husband and my mother. I too had surgery and multiple procedures done by Dr. Shultzel. He is a very upbeat, confident and extremely compassionate doctor. The positive friendly atmosphere almost makes you forget why you’re there. We were all very impressed by the kindness and care that we received. The office and staff are equally remarkable. I have a number of autoimmune disorders and in 21 years of illness I’ve seen hundreds of doctors; trust me when I say there aren’t many like Dr. Shultzel. The three of us were equally grateful to Emily, we just loved her! I would highly recommend Dr. Shultzel to anyone in need of GI care, he is simply the BEST!

I highly recommend Dr. Schultzel. He is very knowledgeable, kind and caring. I was referred to him for a hemorrhoidectomy last year. Have to admit, I put that appointment off for a while and even cancelled a couple of times. I was scared, nervous and embarrassed. I really appreciated that he didn’t sugarcoat anything about the surgery or recovery process, and was able to put my mind at ease. Fast forward 9 months and my gallbladder decided to take a dive during the Covid-19 pandemic. I knew exactly who to call! I knew I would be in good hands. Again, Dr. Schultzel was very kind and caring. He got me in very quickly. A huge shoutout to his assistant, Emily, who works so hard behind the scenes. She is awesome! She always returned my phone calls and made me feel like she truly cared.
