Dr. Miller's Care Philosophy

My approach to treating your neurosurgical problem is based on how I would treat my own family. That means recommending conservative treatment when that is likely to help you and surgical treatment when other treatments have failed and when the data indicates a high chance of a great outcome. In other words, I believe in "doing the right thing" at all times.

I found it hard to put my literal life in someone else's hands. Having been successfully treated by Dr.Miller was not a cakewalk, it took hard work for everyone involved. I now look forward to my by yearly checkups with him. Thank you Dr. Miller and your great staff for all your hard work!

I was diagnosed with sciatica and the pain had become unbearable for me, I was referred to Dr Miller from Urgent Care Center in Grants Pass and at first I was skeptical because when I mentioned to friends that I was going to have back surgery they said, DON'T DO IT, YOU WILL REGRET IT, but I was assured by Dr Miller that there was a high success rate for this procedure, and considering the pain I did it, I now live pain free, I am a 101% satisfied and have no regrets..... I had surgery a few months ago on my low back, specifically a fusion on L4-5. I have had excellent results, and Dr. Miller was wonderful.

Very professional, excellent people skills, great office staff.

I have found Dr. Miller and his staff to be very professional and compassionate. He took the time to talk to me and get the answers he needed to diagnose my shunt malfunction. He has been a great listener for all of the times my shunt has malfunctioned and done what is necessary to find the answers. Dr. Miller returns phone calls and takes the time to take to myself or my parents when the shunt has been thought to be malfunctioning. Sarah Crawford is reassuring and compassionate!

Pinpointed my condition and corrected by back problems that I had for years. I can't thank him enough.
Medford, OR |
There's not enough character to explain the whole story in detail, but I have hydrocephalus and I asked him to order an MRI because I was concerned about my shunt. He refused to do that and shortly after I ended up in the ER with fluid on my brain needing emergency surgery. He did the surgery and I had to go back a week later and have another surgery because he did not do it correctly. Does not listen to patients and was not competent in the OR. I could have died.
in Ashland, OR |
I received a recommendation from the nurses who work in surgery that Dr. Miller was the best! And their assessment held true! Dr. Miller was warm and engaging. He explained everything very clearly even giving some great analogies. In my case, he did not recommend surgery and explained succinctly why not. He is an honest and smart doctor who understands the importance of word of mouth. I highly recommend Dr. Matthew Miller!
in Medford, OR |
He's very professional and a very personable neurosurgeon. He uses the latest surgical techniques for the best outcome. Once referred to Dr. Miller; he and Sarah Crawford, NP, listened to all my concerns, explained the whole process very thoroughly and scheduled my surgery ASAP. There was an unexpected find once in surgery. I am so appreciative that Dr. Miller was able to take the extra time and resolve the issue. There's no guarantee of being pain free after surgery, I'm fortunate-pain free!

Dr. Miller says...

I am especially interested in tracking and optimizing patient outcomes in spinal surgery. This helps me best guide patients through the decision-making process. Arriving at an accurate diagnosis by carefully examining my patients is of utmost importance to me.

The desire to pursue better outcomes led to my use of more minimally invasive techniques. Nearly every spinal operation now can be done through small incisions and speeds recovery when compared to the "traditional" incision for spinal surgery. This speeds patients' recovery times because there is less damage to surrounding tissues.

Cranial surgery is another area of special interest. Pituitary tumors and intrinsic brain tumors are particular areas of expertise. My research was involved with cell cycle and molecular mechanisms of prolactinomas, a type of pituitary tumor. I also received extensive training in epilepsy surgery and malignant brain tumor surgery utilizing functional mapping and awake craniotomies.
