Care Philosophy

My treatment goal is to give you the tools you need to be able to treat yourself. An accurate diagnosis is critical and is arrived at through a thorough history and physical exam. Treatment will focus on physical therapy to help you understand and modify the bio-mechanical root of your problem. Injection techniques using fluoroscopic or Ultrasound guidance are used to facilitate the diagnostic process and to support physical therapy. I do not utilize chronic narcotic pain medications. At RestorePDX we also employ various types of regenerative treatments including prolotherapy, PRP, and autologous stem cell treatments to facilitate and accelerate the healing process.Read more

Dr. Michaels is an excellent physician - he listens to his patients, is easy to talk with, and asks appropriate questions. He looks for solutions and explores a variety of treatment options to help his patients. He explains things well, takes time to answer questions, and does not make his patients feel rushed. Dr. Michaels is a caring professional; he is leaving this area and I am truly sorry to see him go - but very grateful he was here to get us on the right track.

I had severe back pain and Dr Michaels ex-rayed my back and said he could help me. The pain is gone due to his treatments....I have had these pains for several years and it is such a wonderful relief to have them gone.
in Springfield, IL |
Had so many things wrong in my spine that surgery was not an option. Have had shots in back and finally Radiofrequency Ablation (burning of nerves). After being continually in pain my pain level is now .5 out of a scale of 0-10, which for me is a miracle. He is patient, and understanding. He really listens to what you are telling him and seems to really care and explains what he is going to do before and while he does it. I have found his staff to be the same way. Would highly recommend him!

Dr. Michaels understood my pain. He said he would never give up. Just rule things out. What more do we want from a Dr. One that will never give up on us. Thank you, Linda:)

Dr Michael listens and then discusses the options available in an honest and sincere way. If he feels that surgery is the best option, he then honestly talks about the pros and cons of treatment. He is empathetic and very caring. I have recommended him to several people and will continue to do that. Margie G

Dr. Matthew Michaels is a human being and stakes time to get to know how patients and let them know that their plain is real. I came to Dr. Michaels for back pain. I bawled because I just so bad on my first appointment. My last appointment I bawled because I was so happy to not have any pain. It was not easy and I have to do my part to maintain, but he helped me know that it is possible. Thank you for giving me my life back.
I was so comfortable talking and listening him. Best choice I have made in a very long time.

Dr. Michaels says...

Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a medical specialty that is essentially a combination of non-surgical orthopedic surgery and Neurology. As a PM&R physician I am trained to put my primary medical emphasis on function. My goal is to help you return to living life and doing the things that you want and need to do. My practice methods are heavily influenced by my personal history of chronic back pain and my athletic background. I employ a number of tools to diagnose and treat your condition. However my ultimate goal is to educate you regarding the root causes of your pain in order to give you the tools you need to treat yourself as much as possible. We want to teach you to hlp yourself, so you will need our help less often.

My focus is on painful conditions of the bones, joints, muscles, nerves and connective tissue. In that context my primary focus is on painful conditions of the spine including neck pain and headaches as well as lower back pain and leg pain. I have pursued extensive training and have decades of experience in fluoroscopic and ultrasound guided Interventional spinal and peripheral joint procedures, nerve blocks, epidural steroid injections and limb joint injections. These techniques are employed as a part of a comprehensive integrated program of therapy, education and exercise. Specifically injections are used to diagnose and to treat conditions which are resistant to physical therapy. In this context injection techniques serve exclusively as a tool to facilitate participation in a comprehensive, customized rehabilitation program.

When not practicing medicine I enjoy reading, exercise, skiing and woodworking. I am an Ironman triathlete, weightlifter, double black diamond skier, and I practice yoga regularly. I have two adult daughters.

I'm committed to helping my patients of all ages achieved their health goals through individual care and health education to give them the tools needed to manage your own pain through physical therapy, exercise, injections and surgery if and when necessary.

Sincerely,

Matthew Michaels, MD

In addition to extensive training in the non-operative treatment of musculo-skeletal conditions (focusing on painful conditions of the spin) I am also a fellow back pain patient.

I am 51 years old, and despite having ruptured a disc at age 13, with ongoing pain, I have learned techniques and tools that allow me to continue to race Ironman triathlon, and ski double black diamond slopes. A major focus of my practice is to teach you the same techniques I use to maintain my fitness and athletic prowess despite chronic back pain.

I am dedicated to staying current and continuing training in all techniques, established and emerging, that keep my skills on the cutting edge of treatment for musculo-skeletal and neuro-muscular conditions.

Procedural intervention serves two primary purposes. The first is as a diagnostic tool to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. In service of this goal we use targeted injections to anesthetize (make numb) specific structures. As that structure becomes numb, any pain from that site will go away. If your pain is completely relieved, even temporarily, by this then we know that structure that was injected is causing your pain.

Injections also serve as a tool to temporarily relieve your pain to allow for participation in a Physical therapy program designed to address the underlying cause of your pain, though modification of your posture and, your behavior, as well as for restoration of normal range of motion.
