Dr. Martin Arkin, MD
Dr. Arkin was born in Detroit in 1958. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology with high honors and highest distinction. His college performance and research accomplishments earned him a scholarship for training as a physician-scientist for combined M.D. and PhD. (neuroscience) degrees at Washington University. After completing an internship in internal medicine, he began an ophthalmology residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, at Harvard University. Cornea subspeciality training followed at Tufts University. His initial attraction to ophthalmology was due to the ability of procedures such as cataract extraction and laser techniques to dramatically restore sight previously lost. Cataracts and corneal problems are major causes of reversible blindness worldwide, and his training has not only proven valuable here, but also on mission trips to India, Central America, South America and the Carribean. He feels that there is no greater satisfaction than watching someone's face after surgery when they can see again for the first time in years. As the first corneal specialist in the area, Dr. Arkin feels fortunate to have settled in Traverse City. There has been a great need for his services, and he is pleased to be able to treat complex eye problems locally. When he is not working, he enjoys many of the outdoor activities that Northern Michigan has to offer such as kayaking, cycling, snowmobiling, canoeing and skiing.

in Traverse City, MI |
I had 2 very bad eyes, far sighted, near sighted and astigmatism to a high degree. Dr. Arkin performed PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) on both my eyes about 10 days apart. The results have been nothing short of miraculous. 16 years later I still have 20/20 vision and do not even require reading glasses. The icing on the cake -totally unexpected - my night vision improved immeasurably. :).

Really an outstanding surgeon. I had Cataract surgery on both eyes with upgrades to the better lens. I can't say enough about both the quality of service as well as the quality of the lens.
