Dr. Van Poppel is an Excellent Surgeon. He thoroughly listens to your issues and concerns. I have Obstructive Hydrocephalus, for which Van Poppel preformed an ETV surgery. I have been a patient for 4 years and recently moved to Florida. I was having issues that my current Neurosurgeon said I needed a programmable shunt. So, I came back to Charlotte, NC to get a second opinion. I was quickly seen and given an MRI. Turns out I DO NOT need the shunt, but I am having other issues that are causing my problems. Dr. Van Poppel quickly referred me to another clinic to help resolve my issues. Had it not been for my visit with Dr. Van Poppel, I would have had the programmable shunt inserted, but still would having my medical issues. I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have him for my doctor. I will continue to see him, even driving from Florida to make my appointments. He has your best interest at heart. His office staff is also great.

Dr. Van Poppel is a very skilled surgeon. He performed my son’s Chiari 1 surgery at Levine Children’s Center one year ago. Besides the decompression, Zach’s brain tissue had fused to his first two vertebrae. Dr. Van Poppel fixed it all. I wouldn’t say he’s warm and fuzzy, but he’s pleasantly straightforward and treated us with respect and care. Zach was out his 3rd day there and back to school in a week and a half. He played soccer this fall and is playing Lacrosse now with all symptoms gone.

Truly gifted, excellent bedside manner, takes his times answering and explaining your child's conditions and makes every effort to connect with your child and ease their anxiety. My child has a condition that can be very dangerous when not controlled and trusting the physician responsible for staying on top of that is the difference between life or death and life without vision. Interactions are pleasant and positive. He will be behind as with most surgeons at practice, but he can be trusted.

Dr Van Poppel did not follow my instructions and conducted a far more evasive brain biopsy procedure than I agreed to which made me a hemiplegic on left side. His over confidence in the surgical room changed my quality of life in the worst possible way. I have not walked in over 2 years and will never walk again. I walked in the hospital but did not walk out as a result of Dr. Van Poppel making a decision on a procedure I had strictly prohibited. I would have rather died.

Dr. Van Poppel removed a massive non malignant brain tumor in February of this year. I had gone into the hospital completely paralyzed on one side and was walking the next day. I was actually discharged at the 4-week mark to resume normal activities. I had my 9 month follow-up today and there was no trace of the tumor and I am at 100% function. Not only is he extremely skilled but he is kind courteous and professional.
