Dr. Akins was the surgeon who did emergency abdominal surgery on my husband. He was professional, caring, and related well to his patient and the family.

I recently was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. Dr Akins did a lumpectomy. He is one of the most compassionate Doctors I have ever dealt with. I always felt like he was very knowledgeable and that I could trust my care with him. He took alot of time explaining my diagnosis and answering my questions. His office coordinated my care with radiation onocology and radiology. It all was handled very professionally and timely. I would highly recommend him. A big "thank you" to Dr. Akins
Extremely rude and failed to notice cancer in my breast. Would never recommend him to anyone.

I had emergency surgery and Dr Akins was fantastic for several reasons. I was incredibly nervous going into the operating room and Dr Akins was joking with me. It really made me feel less afraid. He has a sort of no nonsense but funny personality that i like in a Doctor. Gets the job done efficiently but with a good attitude. I dont know much about surgery, but my incisions are healing well and all seems great. The wait time for my follow up appointment wasnt long and the staff were nice.

Two surgeries that went wonderfully! Great Surgeon that was very informative and helpful throughout the process. On the weekend Dr. Westmoreland checked on us and was very professional and helpful.

Excellent surgeon. Having worked as a family nurse practitioner for 19+ years, I've always been impressed by the care Dr. Akins gave my patients. I often said that if I ever had need of a surgeon, he would be my first choice. Not that I intended to ever actually need him, I recently needed a lumpectomy. Dr. Akins performed my procedure, did a fabulous job, and I will continue to recommend him to my patients due to his excellent patient care, low surgical complication rate, & his compassion.

Dr. Akins has operated successfully on me twice. The first occasion I had a life threatening bleed and went to St. Thomas' Emergency Room where I passed out from blood loss. I awoke hours later to Dr. Akins' kindly smile; it is no exaggeration to say he saved my life. Several years later when I need a double hernia repaired to damage due to dialysis, Dr. Akins was my first choice. He explained what he was going to do and I had no complications. His staff was kind and courteous.

Dr. Akin called me at 2 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon in 2012 from his office when my radiological report crossed his desk. He did a previous surgery in 2008 and remembered me. He told me to get to his office the next day for a breast biopsy. He is a physician with a wonderful beside manner you don't find anymore. I'm sad my follow up time with him is almost over, but happy my 5 years as a cancer survivor is around the corner. Anyone in need of a surgeon shouldn't hesitate to call his office.

Very kind and compassionate. His staff was unprofessional and extremely unkind. He is a talented surgeon but was too busy and was way too casual with a stage III cancer diagnosis. if he had a good staff and limited his work, he would be truly amazing.
in Nashville, TN |
I was under Dr. Akins' care when I had surgery for Crohn's disease in 2013. The incision became infected with MRSA immediately after and progressed to my heart. He was extremely rude and made little or no effort to actually educate me about my condition. He accused me of faking pains but refused to do more tests or scans to find out why I was still hurting. I had to get another Doctor to go behind his back to order the tests. The tests revealed even more MRSA abscesses. In short, he was awful.
