He began his career with positions at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center, NY, NY, and Deborah Heart and Lung, Browns Mills, NJ. He subsequently held academic and leadership positions including at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA, George Washington University Medical Center, Washington D.C, Cornell University Medical Center/New York Hospital Queens, NY., NY and most recently, Mercy Hospital Buffalo, where, as Chairman, he led the cardiac surgery program to their highest volumes and achievement of a 3 star STS rating, the highest quality rating possible.Dr. Adkins completed his MD degree at George Washington University, Washington, DC. He did his general surgery residency at New York University Medical Center, a thoracic surgery fellowship from MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, and his thoracic and cardiovascular surgery fellowship at New York University Medical Center.Dr. Adkins practice includes all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, excepting heart transplantation. This includes CABG, valve repair/replacement, and repair of aortic aneurysms."
