Dr. Maria Pirraglia joined the SpineNevada practice in 2016. She is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as Physiatry. She specializes in restorative medical care, including the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of a wide variety of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, with special expertise in spine and joint disorders. An integrative approach is taken with goals of regaining function, optimizing performance, reducing pain, and improving quality of life. Dr. Pirraglia earned her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed her residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical College and affiliated institutions, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Rockefeller University. Her training encompassed the rehabilitation of patients recovering from neck and back sprain, spinal cord injury, high-performance athletic injuries, orthopedic surgery, stroke, burns, and cancer. Dr. Pirraglia served as faculty practice Attending Physician, Medical Compliance Officer, and Assistant Professor at the Weill Cornell Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and led a community-based upper east Manhattan outpatient practice sub-specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of spine and neuromuscular disorders. At SpineNevada, Dr. Pirraglia provides in-office consultations for acute pain syndromes requiring musculoskeletal care and neurodiagnostic assessment. An experienced electromyographer, Dr. Pirraglia utilizes EMG and nerve conduction studies to diagnose and monitor patients suffering from backaches, neck pain, and repetitive strain syndromes, such as carpal tunnel, and to evaluate symptoms of numbness, tingling, muscle spasm, weakness, atrophy, or loss of coordination. Dr. Pirraglia performs therapeutic injections for arthritic joints and stiff, painful muscles, including cortisone, hyaluronan viscoelastic supplementation, and trigger point therapy. Dr. Pirraglia is a published author, has co-created instructional video presentations for the Continuing Medical Education (CME) network, and has been an invited guest lecturer on rehabilitation specialty topics, particularly winter sports injuries, for several prestigious medical universities on both the east and west coasts. At SpineNevada, Dr. Pirraglia provides office-based evaluation and treatment, including non-invasive procedures to improve joint flexibility, increase muscle strength, offset the effects of aging, and promote a generalized feeling of wellness.
