Care Philosophy

An allergist is a pediatric and/or internal medicine physician who has undergone at least two additional years of specialized training in Allergy & Immunology. No other physician specialty has this level of expertise in treating patients with these conditions. When a person has an allergic reaction, it means their immune system mistakenly believes a substance is harmful and responds by trying to eliminate it. Allergic reactions can be mild, like a runny nose, or in rare cases, cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat and tongue, or even loss of consciousness. While allergic disorders are very common, they are also very complex and require detailed care from a specialist. Our allergy & immunology doctor provides consultation, testing, treatment and continuing care for allergies and allergic conditions, plus testing and treatment for disorders of the immune system.Read more

Took the time to understand my questions and concerns. Very knowledgable, professional, and courteous.

I used to go the previous practice location on Summerfield. Wow, what a change!! Dr. Petrick took the time to listen to my concerns, and had a plan for me straight away. I think I saw the Dr. at the old location once in 6 years. Great to have her in the community.

Brought my 5 year old in for allergy testing. Dr Petrick was wonderful with him! Some doctors who aren't pediatricians seem cold and awkward with kids -not this doctor! Now he's doing allergy shots weekly and looks forward to going! A 5 year old who isn't kicking and screaming for weekly shots - what does that tell you about this practice??? Amazing!!!
in Petaluma, CA |
She was cold, uncaring and unhelpful. Even my personal dr. was upset she did not do what he wanted her to do and referred me to another allergist.
in Ukiah, CA |
Compassionate teaching style. Listens to my questions without judging. Extremely knowledgeable and professional, while retaining a feeling that I'm her only patient of the day.

Conditions Treated

Dr. Petrick says..

Your initial visit is a fairly lengthy one. Realizing that this an important evaluation, we will schedule approximately ninety minutes of office time. If you are visiting the office for allergies, allergy skin testing is generally recommended. Since antihistamines interfere with testing, please do not take any medications containing antihistamines for 7 full days prior to your appointment. If stopping the antihistamines presents a problem you can discuss this with our staff when scheduling your appointment. If you do take an antihistamine prior to your appointment please keep your appointment with the doctor. We can reschedule the skin testing for a later date with our nursing staff. At your initial visit the doctor will do a review of history with analysis of past records if available, a physical examination from the waist up with emphasis on the organ system of most concern, laboratory examination and a lung function determination for patients with chest complaints.

After the exam and testing is done the doctor will make specific recommendations regarding methods of avoidance of various allergens, such as pollens(trees, grass, weeds), house dust, animal danders, molds and mite. Topics frequently discussed include the use of vacuums, allergy covers for mattress and pillows, air purifers, etc.

Patients with strong positive skin tests and symptoms affecting their daily life may be candidates for immunotherapy (allergy shots).

Medications can play a major role in controlling allergy symptoms. Emphasis is on using those medications which protect the body against the development of symptoms rather than medications that are simply used to reverse symptoms that are already present. We will discuss with you the most effective way to utilize medications to prevent your allergies and asthma, while at the same time minimizing the need for further medications that tend to be used for acute symptoms.
