Dr. Ryali's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Ryali "News story published in Chicago Tribune, Friday, June 30, 2017 Elmhurst medical teams 'changed' by helping Syrian refugees in Lebanon By Graydon MeganPioneer PressA group of a dozen medical specialists and other caregivers from Edward-Elmhurst Health, most from Elmhurst Hospital, recently returned from a volunteer medical mission to Lebanon, where they provided medical care to more than 1,500 patients. "Most of us had never been to Lebanon," said Dr. Madhavi Ryali, a kidney specialist with Nephrology Associates of Northern Illinois and Elmhurst Hospital, who organized the Edward-Elmhurst contingent. The group eventually grew to about 25, including medical professionals affiliated with other hospitals in the Chicago area, Philadelphia and the United Kingdom. Specialties represented included internal medicine, general surgery, urology, oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, vascular surgery and nephrology. The trip was sponsored by the Washington, D. C.–based Syrian-American Medical Society, which sponsors ongoing trips to assist Syrian refugees in such places as Turkey, Jordan and Greece as well as Lebanon. "Anywhere where there are large refugee populations," Ryali said. But Ryali described the Elmhurst group's trip as an ad hoc mission that grew out of a contact made through some Syrian doctors at Elmhurst, who put her in touch with Dr. A. Yaser Wafai, an anesthesiologist affiliated with Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville who works with the Syrian-American group on medical missions to Lebanon. From there, Ryali, a mother of two originally from Alabama, began to recruit doctors, nurses and others for the mission, which involved some sacrifice. Participants had to arrange to be away from their normal work for a week and had to pay their own way. "We paid our own airfare, we paid for our own hotels and meals," Ryali said. Support for the trip also came in the form of a $5,000 donation from Elmhurst Hospital and a like amount from the Elmhurst medical staff. Other donors stepped up, and a total of $45,000 was raised. Ryali said much of that went to pay for operating costs in hospitals in Lebanon, but some covered medicines the group took with them, including medications for blood pressure and diabetes, asthma inhalers and antibiotics. Group members also brought equipment with them, packing blood pressure cuffs, thermometers and weight scales. In Lebanon, the group split up, with surgeons working in hospitals and surgical centers with access to operating rooms and equipment. "The rest of us focused on general medicine, pediatrics and internal medicine," Ryali said of the work she and some of the group did in refugee camps. "We just set up a table and some chairs (in the camps) and the people came." In addition to treating people there, Ryali said the group brought along what she called "goody bags" they made up before leaving Elmhurst, packed with such personal hygiene items as toothpaste, toothbrushes and sanitary napkins. The team treated patients in Beirut, Tripoli and the Bekaa Valley in settings ranging from hospitals and clinics to both small and large camps for refugees. By the end of the week, the group had seen about 1,560 patients, provided more than 1,300 consultations and performed about 200 surgeries and dozens of diagnostic procedures. The work called for both medical skills and adaptability, as team members dealt with technology a bit behind that in the U.S., limited availability of translators and a labor strike that cut into the time surgeons had to operate. They also had to navigate the Lebanese health care system, albeit with the help of local Lebanese doctors. But for all that, Ryali said the group will definitely go back next April, perhaps sooner. "The biggest thing is going there, just hearing (the refugees' stories) – you hear about them in the media – it touches you in a different way," she said. "To be able to talk with these people, to interact with them…it changed all of us.""
