I began my studies at the University of South Florida in 1970 and went to the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1974. I did my Internal Medicine Internship at the University of Texas- Medical Branch from 1977-1978 and then did my residency there as well from 1978-1980. I took a Rheumatology Fellowship position at Loma Linda University Medical Center in 1980 and received my Board Certification in 1982. I started private practice in 1982 in Modesto, California where I am currently still practicing. Additionally, in 2012 I began working out of Hazel Hawkins Hospital in Hollister, California due to a great need for rheumatologist in Monterey County and the surrounding area.

Learn about Dr. Sutter
Midway through my internal medicine residency, I reassessed what I wanted to do and the patients I enjoyed seeing most had arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. By far, they were the most grateful for whatever relief could be provided to them. Decades later, I am still happiest treating rheumatoid arthritis. I can recall numerous patients who have had dramatic transformations in their lives with treatment. What's more, they deeply appreciate it.
In 2012, Medscape published results of a survey on physician happiness by specialty. And despite having the lowest income in the survey, rheumatologists were the happiest.
