I am surprised and sorry to hear that anyone had a negative experience with Dr. Riopel. My own experience with her and her interactions with preteens and teens have shown so much empathy and insight—I trust her without question. There are concerns with some anxiety medications and antidepressants that there can be adverse effects that lead to self harm or tragic results, so perhaps she was attempting to be certain that wasn’t occurring with your child. I have never had an issue when I asked Dr. Riopel a question or voiced any concerns. She is a gem.

Dr. Riopel does not seem to understand teen issues and mental health. She body shamed my daughter during a wellness check and there were no health issues. She also started every conversation with my daughter with high social anxiety with a direct question if she had thoughts of hurting herself?" and "what would you do if you did?" Now I understand this is important for doctors to watch out for, but my daughter has never done any self-harming behaviors and for a teen with high social anxiety- it was handled in the worst way possible. Lastly, if my daughter did not want to talk to Dr. R directly (due to the body shaming, and eager direct over-contact about self-harm) the doctor would literally withhold her medication renewal which was a low dose or anxiety medication she had been on for several years without any complications ever. She needs to learn more about body issues and depression in teens and teen mental health in general.

Dr. Riopel has been a rockstar from the start. She was so kind and thorough in her care for our newborn and in answering all our questions. She has been great at all well child visits and is down to earth and interactive. Our child had a more complicated health event later and Dr. Riopel acted fast and was a key part of figuring out what was happening and getting the right treatment... an action that means our child won't have long-term issues. Can't recommend her enough!
