Care Philosophy

As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst I am in a unique position to understand a patient. I listen carefully to a patient's words and associated emotions. I empathize with the patient and help a patient see from their own words how their minds are working, i.e. what worries and fears seem to be dominant that were not necessilarily obvious to them before. Exploring these helps one understand themselves at a gut level and become more "free" and less anxious, worried or depressed.Read more

I do not ask patients to grade me. I think it may be an infringement on their autonomy and can tilt aspects of the therapy.

Conditions Treated

Dr. Cohn says..

I have had six years of psychoanalytic training in addition to my psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine training. I am a Fellow of the American Board of Psychoanalysis and hold senior academic and clinical positions in the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute as well as in The U. of Miami School of Medicine.  As a result I usually can understand what one is experiencing, what is needed in the type of psychotherapy and what one wants to accomplish. I can usually deliver such in meaningful ways. Very few have such training and certifications. I work with those who want a therapy in which we both talk and listen as well as one in which there is growth.  I am very experienced and love the work I do.

Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.
