This content was provided by Dr. Arend ""Dr. Laurence Arend's special interest is in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration and he is actively participating in national research trials in these areas. He is a pioneer in the develpoment of surgery for macular holes. Dr. Arend holds Clinical Assistant Professorships at LSU and Tulane and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Vitreous Society. He is the President of the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology and Past President of the Southern Retina Group and the Baylor Ophthalmology Alumni Association. In 1994, His Royal and Imperial Highness Prince Robert and the Honours Committee of the New York-based Imperial Russian Order of Saint John of Jerusalem Ecumenical Foundation for philanthropic endeavors knighted Dr. Arend with the Bestowal of Honors. Dr. Laurence Arend was born in Austin, Texas and attended high school there. His attended collete at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he was on the deans list. He earned his medical degree from Tulane, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his internship at Charity Hospital and his residencies in internal medicine and pathology with the U.S. Public Health Service in New Orleans. He completed his ophthalmology residency and cornea fellowship at St. John Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel, and a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Arend is board certified in ophthalmology and has been on staff at Ochsner since 1979. Dr. Arend practices at Ochsner's main campus.""
