Dr. Pihl graduated medical school from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He subsequently completed his General Surgery Residency at Mclaren Greater Lansing in Lansing, Michigan. During his residency he completed additional training in colorectal surgery at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic as well as trauma surgery at the busiest level I trauma center in Ohio; Grant Medical Center. He was an active participant of the Mclaren Breast Care Center, which is nationally recognized and associated with the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Pihl is an avid educator and has a Clinical Faculty appointment at Michigan State University, and is a Core Faculty member of the General Surgery Residency Program at Metro Health Hospital. He has been active in research with several publications and presentations. As a surgeon, Dr. Pihl has special interests in abdominal surgery, particularly cancer operations, gallbladder disease, breast cancer, colon and rectal cancer, melanoma, hernia repair including sport's hernias, and minimally invasive techniques. He is also competent in endoscopy - both upper and lower scopes. Dr. Pihl and his partner at Grand Rapids Surgical Associates aim to provide exceptional patient care. The decisions a patient must make surrounding the time of surgery can be challenging, but Dr. Pihl makes the process as easy as possible through patient education, an easy going bedside manner, and taking all the necessary time to ensure his patients understand what they should expect around the time of surgery.
