This content was provided by Dr. Kernstine "Dr. Kernstine has had over 15 years of robotic surgical experience with more than 1,500 robotic chest cases and a video-assisted experience since 1990. Dr. Kernstine earned undergraduate and M.D. degrees from Duke University and completed surgical training and Ph.D. studies at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Kernstine's cardiothoracic training was performed at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Additionally, Dr. Kernstine is former Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Section of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Iowa, and Professor and Director of the Lung Cancer and Thoracic Oncology Program and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. Previously, Dr. Kernstine was Chairman for the Thoracic Surgery Subcommittee, Vice Chairman for the Lung Committee, Chairman for the Mesothelioma Task Force for the SouthWest Oncology Group, and the Chairman for the Workforce for Research and Clinical Trials for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has been a member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer for 20 years and is the Vice Chairman of the Lung Cancer Staging Committee. Dr. Kernstine's research interests have been in the evaluation, early detection, and treatment of lung cancer; the molecular biological features of lung and esophageal malignancy; and minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery. He has an over 20 year history of clinical trial group involvement and long history of clinical, translational, and basic science investigation with more than 150 peer reviewed publications and four journal editorial boards. Dr. Kernstine is currently involved with five grants and has participated in over $20 million in grant funding."
