Care Philosophy

As an Adult Psychiatrist, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Interventional Spine and Pain Medicine specialist, and Addiction specialist, I have particular interest in minimizing opiate requirements and treating both the physical and psychological experience of pain in adults and children. Using advanced physical therapy, interventional therapy, regenerative medicine, and complementary and alternative medicine combined with optimal psychopharmacology and analgesic management, I have yet to encounter a painful area anywhere in the body that cannot be improved or resolved.

Biography

Born and raised in Upstate New York, Dr Spooner attended the University of Rochester with dual degrees in Neuroscience and Psychology before attending medical school at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine where he obtained a medical doctorate with research honors. Completion of medical school occurred in the wake of hurricane Katrina and Dr Spooner chose to complete his Pediatric Internship and Adult Psychiatry and Neurology residency in New Orleans, LA at Tulane University where he could do the greatest good for those in need while furthering his medical training. Dr Spooner was attracted to the field of psychiatry as he felt strongly that the enjoyment of life was as important or more important than the quantity of life and found pain management and end or life care particularly fulfilling.

After completing residency training, Dr Spooner attended Johns Hopkins Hospital where he completed advanced fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Neurology with specific recognition by the hospital CEO for going above and beyond with excellence in patient care. At this time in his life Dr Spooner still felt the need to improve the treatment of pain in Children and Adults so went on to further fellowship training in Anesthesia Interventional Spine and Pain Medicine at Indiana University where he gained further experience in interventional pain techniques and was widely recognized for excellence in the treatment of complex pain in both the adult pain medicine clinic and the Riley hospital pediatric pain clinic.

Dr Spooner has been visiting his family in Ponte Vedra Beach for over a decade and settled in Jacksonville to be closer to family and enjoy an active lifestyle. Dr Spooner takes great pride in his achievements as a father, a friend, and as a physician and treats each patient with the same care and attention he offers his own family.

I Would recommend. I went to another pain management Dr for 6 yrs & not any of the procedures he did ever helped. He did the same thing for years and when he finally did the burning of the nerves in the lower back because of pinched nerves he burned my skin & did not hit the correct spot. He really took advantage of my Insurance. Dr. Spooner is very different he listens & tries to remendy the problem by medication or other procedures. I have had 8 discs replaced in my back and 4 in my neck.

I've been doing pain management for 10 or more years. So I've bbeen through several Pain Management Dr's. Since I started seeing Dr Spooner I wouldn't go anywhere else. His professionalism, positive attitude, knowledge of my personal medical issues will keep me in his care for as long as possible. His staff are friendly, professional, knowledgeable, helpful and kind. I would recommend his services to anyone I knew that would benefit from them.

I have been a patient for only a few months. I have been in constant pain for over 5 years with numerous Doctors not coming close to making it better. Dr. Spooner has made me feel almost pain free on a daily basis. I am back in the gym, walking daily, mowing the lawn pain free, going to the beach, all pain free. Not sure how he figured out what no one else could, but he is A FLAT OUT SUPERSTAR!!!!!!!!

Dr. Spooner is one of the best doctors that I've had. He was able to tell me exactly what my problem was before even seeing my CT scan. The thing was, he hit it right on the b head. He wasn't off by any. I've been dealing with lower back pain along with pain and problems down my right side for nine years and no one could figure it out until I started seeing Dr. Spooner. His staff is just as wonderful and friendly as he is. The staff is knowledgeable and has no problem helping you.

I have had nothing but excellent service from Dr.Spooner and staff. I have noticed the attention to detail as well as the we need to get this right attitude. I have found that these are hard to find now it's all about money and a multitude of patients but this is not the case here. Great care and compassionate procedures. Thanks, Jeffrey Cole

Dr. Spooner is an all around great guy. As a doctor he listens and takes time to hear what all is going on. Dr. Spooner explores options and together a plan of care is developed. Sometimes he will use big fancy words but whenever I ask him what he is talking about he brings it back to plain language. I would highly recommend Dr. Spooner to anyone looking for back and pain management. He also does wonders for migraines! An added plus is he has a great sense of humor!

Dr. Spooner says...

I have advanced fellowship training in complex pain in both children and adults with extensive experience in interventional and non-interventional treatment options and understand that the goal is to improve quality of life which is subjective for each patient. I take the time to diagnose and recommend individualized treatments based on my patient's goals and feel if they are motivated, together we can achieve anything. Furthermore, I treat both the physical and psychological experience of pain including disturbances of sleep, mood, anxiety, energy, and appetite to ensure my patients are comfortable and having maximum enjoyment from life.

I am the only physician in the country with Board Certifications in both Adult, Child, Adolescent psychiatry, Anesthesia Pain Medicine, and Addiction Medicine which has provided me with a unique perspective and skillset to help my patient's do better.

Dr. Spooner says...

I have implanted well over 1,000 pumps and stimulator devices with excellent patient results and feel strongly that I offer the highest level of care with the greatest number of advanced evidence-based procedures in Florida and stand by my excellent patient outcomes and high patient satisfaction. Personally, I do not recommend maintenance steroid therapies and find that nerve ablative and regenerative medicine techniques can alleviate the need for steroids. I always communicate openly about my medical opinion and have many excellent specialists that I refer to when a condition merits further diagnostic testing or treatments. Many of my patients are successfully maintained on little or no medication even those with histories of severe injuries refractory to all prior treatment.

I am the only pediatric pain medicine specialist in North Florida and am also the only pelvic pain specialist. I treat pain from failed spinal surgeries and sports injury and also am a headache and spasticity specialist offering all treatments available for management of acute and chronic pain.
