Dr. Fortin's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Fortin "Dr. Joseph Fortin is currently the Medical Director of Spine Technology and Rehabilitation P.C. and a Clinical Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. His board certifications include: American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, Pain Management (American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation), and Fellow Interventional Pain Practice (World Institute of Pain). He completed his physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Baylor College of Medicine and from there served three years in several directorship roles as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Fortin then dedicated three years to a spine radiology practice in New Orleans (interpreting MRI and CT as well as performing image-guided injection procedures). He maintained an academic affiliation as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation at Louisiana State University. He has given numerous national and international lectures, as well as scientific presentations. Dr. Fortin is internationally recognized for his novel scientific studies on the sacroiliac joint. His research endeavors (as expressed in the world peer review literature) however are diverse and include: 1) mapping sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain referral patterns; 2) determining the innervation of the SIJ; 3) describing imaging and arthrography techniques for the SIJ; 4) the relative contributions of the disc and zygapophyseal joints in chronic low back pain; 5) relating biomechanics of injury to spine pain in athletes, 6) A United States Olympic Committee funded injury tracking protocol and 7) the frequency of ostepenia in male patients on opioids. He also completed a controlled, randomized study on the remote effects of the clinical/experimental environment on functional outcome. For ten years, Dr. Fortin has been on the leading edge of a new specialty area of healthcare, applying stem cells and biological media, known as Regenerative Medicine (e.g. growth factors, bioscaffolds and stem cells). Dr. Fortin employs image-guidance devices to ensure the patient's concentrated healing cells are administrated at the exact coordinates of their damaged tissues. This exciting technology has been used to help a wide array of Dr. Fortin's patients, including: as an option to total joint replacement, to heal discs and nerves in the spine, for severe sports injuries, osteoarthritis and degenerative arthritis, as well as intractable nerve pain (e.g. trigeminal neuralgia). Through his collaborations with Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Fortin has been principle investigator in research projects – exploring the effects of stem cell therapy and biologic media on the human body. Recently, he received an educational award from the American Academy of Regenerative Orthopedic Medicine. Dr. Fortin is an avid weightlifter and former competitive bodybuilder. He enjoys fishing, downhill skiing, golfing and spending time with his wife. "
