When I was a 17 year old lifeguard in Houston, I had the opportunity to do mouth-to-mouth and CPR on a young boy found at the bottom of the deep end. It worked! That was the first time that I was involved in saving a life, and enjoyed that sense of accomplishment.A few years later, I was fortunate to spend a summer working with Dr. Denton Cooley and his fellow heart surgeons at the Texas Heart Institute. As an undergraduate student, I was able to scrub in with the best surgeons in the world, hold the heart and even close their incisions. From that point, I knew that I would be a surgeon.
