Double Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Dr. John Sassano is an Interventional Pain Management Specialist. At the B.A.C.K. Center in Melbourne and Merritt Island, Florida, his primary focus is on improving patients' quality of life through the application of interventional treatments for the management of pain and related disorders, including degenerative diseases of the spine, post-operative spine pain, spinal injuries and various neurological disorders.
Dr. Sassano received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed his surgical internship at Medical Center Hospital in Vermont. His residencies in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine were completed at University Health Center of Pittsburgh and Research, Pain and Resuscitation Fellowships were completed at University Health Center of Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Texas Tech University. He is a current or past member of the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, International Anesthesia Research Society, Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists, Pittsburgh High Tech Council, Western Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists and Western Pennsylvania Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists.
In 1984, Dr. Sassano was recognized as the Inventor of the Year by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Foundation for pioneering the design and development of the patented Rapid Venous Infusion System. Over his 30 year career as a leading interventional pain physician, he has authored or co-authored numerous articles and papers for peer-reviewed publications; has been a frequent speaker and lecturer at medical conferences and events; and previously served as the personal medical advisor to Dr. James C. Fletcher, the administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Prior to joining the clinical team at The B.A.C.K. Center, Dr. Sassano was a Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine; Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; Co-Director of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology at Presbyterian University Hospital, where he also oversaw the Cardiovascular Anesthesiology Fellowship Program; and Director of Anesthesia, MRI Procedures, at NMR Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
