John S. Parker, M.D., has been practicing medicine for over 25 years, and in that time has become a nationally recognized ophthalmologist, introducing new, cutting-edge procedures to patients across the world. Dr. Parker received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University's College of Engineering in 1976. He worked as an engineer in New Orleans, Louisiana, while pursuing a medical degree at Louisiana State University, which he completed in 1986. He then accepted an internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, followed by a three-year ophthalmology residency at UAB's Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital. In 1990, he accepted a corneal fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Parker returned to Birmingham in 1991 as Director of the Cornea Service at the UAB School of Medicine. Dr. Parker is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and has served as Director of the Residency Program for the Department of Ophthalmology at UAB, trustee and advisory board member of the Alabama Eye Bank, President of the Medical Staff of the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Vice President of the International Retinal Research Foundation. Academically, Dr. Parker has written chapters for ophthalmology texts, published articles in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals and presented scientific papers, posters and courses at numerous national ophthalmic meetings. Further, Dr. Parker is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology where he trains ophthalmology residents and fellows. Dr. Parker devotes himself to his private ophthalmology practice, Parker Cornea, located within the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital, and donates time and expertise to care for needy patients in local clinics and international settings. He and his wife, Bonnie, have five children.
