Dr. Merson grew up in the Bay Area and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University, where he played on the tennis team. After graduating, he worked in the computer industry but a reassessment of his career path led him to the UCLA School of Medicine, graduating in 1984, alongside his wife, Heidi. Dr. Merson stayed in Los Angeles for his orthopedic residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He returned to the Bay Area to begin private practice in 1989, but after three years opted to pursue subspecialty training in sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, GA. Following his residency, Dr. Merson worked at Diablo Orthopaedic Medical Group in Walnut Creek, CA, and Pittsburg, CA, from August 1989-June 1992, and Coastal Orthopaedic and Sports Specialists in Concord and Walnut Creek from August 1993-September 1997.
