Care Philosophy

Today's patients have a wealth of information readily available to them and it is my job to refine and deepen the understanding of their injury/ problem, and the treatment options best suited to their individual situation. Only by listening to my patient's concerns and descriptions can we arrive at an accurate diagnosis, and develop an individualized treatment plan. Regrettably, in a busy practice, there are times where in giving every patient the time they need, I will get behind and cause myself to be late in seeing subsequent patients. My priority is to give patients the time necessary to achieve our goal of an accurate and sound treatment plan.Read more

Dr. Healey Jr. says..

My sub-specialty training in sports medicine built a sound foundation that has allowed me develop and grow my interests in knee cartilage transplants, and in the treatment of non-arthritis hip diseases. I have been one of the two team orthopedic surgeons for the Grand Valley State University since 1998, in addition to being an educator instructing orthopedic residents in the Grand Rapids Orthopedic Surgery Program since that time as well. Treating high level athletes and instructing intelligent inquisitive orthopedic residents necessitates that one is well versed in cutting edge treatments and always knowledgeable of the latest medical studies.

Procedures Performed

Dr. Healey Jr. says..

My training allowed me to be prepared to perform the first autologous chondrocyte implantation (Knee cartilage transplant) in Grand Rapids, MI in 1999. Since that time I have performed hundreds of knee cartilage transplants, including Osteochondral Allograft transplant, OATS, Microfracture, DeNovo Cartilage Allograft transplant and ACI (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation). Hip arthroscopy was a relatively new procedure with only a few surgeons performing the surgery nationwide when I completed my orthopedic and sports medicine training in 1998. In 2000, with mentorship of a few world renowned hip arthroscopy surgeons, I performed my first hip arthroscopy. Since that time, the need for Hip arthroscopy has expanded significantly, as has our knowledge and understanding of hip diseases, and now hip arthroscopy and hip impingement surgery encompasses almost 25% of my practice.

Dr. Healey Jr. says...

I aim is to see that my patients are provided the best and most current treatment that medicine can deliver, even if that means referring them to another physician to achieve that goal. I am continuously investigating new treatments, and balancing utilizing "tried and true" traditional treatments versus cutting edge new interventions.
