Joel Nilsson is a compassionate and engaging orthopedic surgeon serving his patients in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Nilsson is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and certified to perform surgery of the hand. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Nilsson received his medical education at Georgetown University, and then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Texas Tech University and William Beaumont Army Medical Center. During his residency program, Dr. Nilsson was serving in the United States Army, a service that continued for 14 years. Dr. Nilsson completed his fellowship in hand surgery at Union Memorial National Hand Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Nilsson has an affinity for treating and operating on complex hip and knee replacements. Dr. Nilsson performs many cutting-edge procedures, including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, direct anterior total hip replacement, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, and endoscopic carpal tunnel release. He was one of the first orthopedic surgeons in San Antonio to perform the Makoplasty robotic assisted partial knee replacement. Dr. Nilsson and his family own a small "hobby farm," which includes mini-donkeys, a horse, and chickens. In his spare time, Dr. Nilsson enjoys tinkering and restoring a 1977 Jeep CJ5 with his son.
