Dr. Jochen Reiser, MD is a nephrology doctor who practices in Chicago, IL. He is 46 years old and has been practicing for 19 years. Dr. Reiser is affiliated with Rush University Medical Center.
I think patients in general are always surprised when they go to a nephrologist, because they did not really know why they had to see a nephrologist to begin with. Because if you have early kidney disease you don't feel any different than you felt a year ago, other than some parameters in the blood and in the urine don't look right. It's not always an emergency, nephrology, but it still requires action. And if we act, we can really affect a long-term trajectory of the disease. So if you're 40 years old and have a third of kidney function left, that's just not going to be enough to make it for your entire lifespan. And we better start early in preserving as much of that kidney function as possible. An example I like to provide to my patients is if you do a road trip with your car and you have a third of the gas tank full, you know you can go about a hundred miles, maybe. You wouldn't take it on to take it for 500 miles, right? So you've got to get a perspective of what is my kidney function in relation to the life that I hopefully have ahead of me. Nephrology is a very research-intense discipline and my laboratory and other laboratories here at Rush are very, very engaged in deep and molecular and clinical research in that area. And we can translate that knowledge into better diagnostics and better treatments of our patients today.
