My goal is to provide the best available orthopaedic care to the people of Richmond and Central Virginia.
Dr. Torbert was born and raised in Tennessee until the age of 11 when he and his family moved to Ohio. He graduated summa cum laude from the Case Western Reserve School of Engineering in 1999. His academic honors included the Biomedical Engineering Faculty Award for Scholarship & Service. Dr. Torbert worked as a biomedical engineer at Medtronic in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was awarded a patent for his work in the field of cardiac surgery. He then returned to Case Western Reserve where he completed a Master's degree in applied human anatomy while attending medical school. He completed his internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of Pennsylvania. As a result of his research accomplishments, he received the Orthopaedic Clinician Scientist Development Program Award, which is awarded annually to residents in the United States who demonstrate the ability to be leaders in orthopaedic clinical research.
Following residency, Dr. Torbert spent one year as an orthopaedic trauma fellow at the world-renowned R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Here he took care of patients with the most severe injuries including pelvic and acetabular fractures, complex periarticular fractures, mangled extremities, severe open fractures, severe post-traumatic deformities, non-unions, infections, and large bone loss requiring limb lengthening.
Before coming to OrthoVirginia in 2015, Dr. Torbert practiced at UT Medical Center in Knoxville, TN, a very busy level 1 trauma center. Dr. Torbert specializes in fracture care, hip replacements (including the direct anterior approach), knee replacements, knee arthroscopy, and osteoporosis in addition to general orthopaedics. He serves as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Chippenham Hospital.
Outside of work, Dr. Torbert enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters. He loves mountain biking and also enjoys traveling, swimming, and XTERRA off-road triathlons. He is delighted to live in Richmond and honored to be a part of OrthoVirginia.
