He graduated summa cum laude from the Case Western Reserve School of Engineering in 1999. His academic honors included the Biomedical Engineering Faculty Award for Scholarship & Service. Dr. Torbert worked as a biomedical engineer at Medtronic in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was awarded a patent for his work in the field of cardiac surgery. Before coming to Virginia in 2015, Dr. Torbert practiced at UT Medical Center in Knoxville, TN, a very busy level 1 trauma center. Dr. Torbert specializes in fracture care, hip replacements (including the direct anterior approach), knee replacements, knee arthroscopy, and osteoporosis in addition to general orthopaedics. He serves as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Chippenham Hospital. Outside of work, Dr. Torbert enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters. He loves mountain biking and also enjoys traveling, swimming, and XTERRA off-road triathlons. He is delighted to live in Richmond and honored to be a part of VCU Orthopaedics."

I highly recommendation Dr. Torbert . Not only did he fix my broken leg -- he restored my confidence in the medical community. He actually cares about his patients after surgery and even called me a few days later at home to personally check on me . Thanks to him I' m getting back on my horse!

I had only seen Dr Torbert once because my ortho doctor had retired. I was very impressed. Went to make another appt and found he had left. When I called his new office I was told he only sees patients with injuries. I was very disappointed. I guess my hunt in on again for another doctor

Dr. Torbert fixed my broken kneecap and did so in a most miraculous way! I barely had a pain. Was off pain meds in 5 days only taking Tylenol. Yes there was soreness; yes rehab was hard but after three months of doing exactly what he told me to I today walked a mile at the park! This man knows his...more

Sent message before appointment on patient portal never answered. Xrays were taken which were never shown (had to track down his assistant who gave me a black and white print-out with no explanation). He tried to prescribe an antibiotic for what he thought was an allergic reaction (turned out to be...more

I have never refused to show or explain xrays if someone has asked me. It does take longer and many patients do not care either way. I appreciate it when patients ask if they do want to take the extra time to hear about xrays. Sometimes I prescribe an antibiotic if there is redness after an operation as a precaution to avoid a worsening infection, and I explain this to all patients. Sometimes it is difficult to tell between allergic reaction and a very early superficial infection.
