This content was provided by Dr. Weiss "Dr. Jeffrey Weiss currently serves on the medical staff at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA (Hillcrest) as a vascular surgeon. He retired from 30 years of active-duty Navy service in 2017. Captain Jeffrey S. Weiss was the Chair, Surgery Department, Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) from 2013-2017. He led 20 active-duty Navy and DOD civilian surgeons from 9 specialties in the delivery of surgical care to military members, retirees, and their dependents. Along with the Program Director, he directed the education of 35 house-staff which produced over half of all Navy-trained general surgeons. Commissioned in May 1991, CAPT Weiss obtained his baccalaureate degree in Chemistry from the United States Naval Academy with honors. He received his medical doctorate from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and completed his internship at the Flagship of Navy Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. After finishing Flight Surgery School at Pensacola, Florida, he went on to serve as a Flight Surgeon for Carrier Air Wing-14 stationed out of Miramar Naval Air Station from 1997 to 1999. He deployed in support of Operation Southern Watch aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Persian Gulf, where he earned his Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer designation. He returned to San Diego to complete his surgical training at the NMCSD General Surgery Department. Following graduation, he was briefly utilized as a general surgeon at the Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital in Twentynine Palms before completing a two-year vascular surgery fellowship at Yale University. In 2006, CAPT Weiss deployed with 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force in support of the surge during Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Officer-in-Charge of the Forward Surgical Resuscitative Suite Camp Fallujah. After return from this deployment he took over as the NMCSD Chief of Vascular from 2008-2013. He was elected and served as the NMCSD Medical Staff Chairman from 2008-2010, filling positions on the Executive Steering Council (ESC), Quality Care Committee, and Executive Committee for Graduate Medical Education. In 2011, CAPT Weiss deployed as an Individual Augmentee to Kandahar Air Field Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit to provide both trauma and vascular surgical services for Operation Enduring Freedom. During this tour, he also supported the Army Forward Surgical Hospital in Forward Operating Base Spin Boldak. In 2013, CAPT Weiss was selected to be the Chairman of the Surgery Department where he supervised a $10 million dollar departmental space renovation and spearheaded the creation of the Command Endoscopy Center. Dr. Weiss is board-certified in both General and Vascular Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and active member in the Society for Vascular Surgery. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has spoken at many regional and national vascular meetings."
