This content was provided by Dr. Oakes "Dr. Jean Evans Oakes, M.D. joined the UAB Department of Surgery Division of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty in 2003. An extensively trained scholar and academician, she received the Kurt M.W. Niemann Outstanding UAB Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Award in 2013. Dr. Oakes clinical interests are primarily in surgery to the hand; injuries of the hand and wrist ranging from fractures and dislocations to lacerations of muscles, nerves, blood vessels and tendons, as well as carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, finger tendonitis, and arthritis of the hand wrist and forearm. In addition, Dr Oakes cares for children's hand injuries at The Children's Hospital of Alabama and has had extensive experience in Congenital Hand Deformities in Treatment and Reconstruction. She has published and lectured regarding her clinical work. As the Director of the Hand, Microvascular, and Upper Extremity Fellowship, Dr. Oakes is closely involved with, and thoroughly enjoys teaching activities related to the Residents and Fellows."

Patients with infants and young children with complex congenital malformations, trauma, and lifelong limitations often need complex procedures with outcomes that do not make the child "normal". This is often very difficult to explain to their young parents. These surveys did not include adult patients with more routine and common problems.
