Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Agrawal "Dr. Jaya Agrawal specializes in minimally invasive hemorrhoid management, anemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, and functional bowel disease (irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, and bloating). Her interests include nutrition, celiac disease, obesity/weight loss and alternative medicine. She completed her undergraduate and medical education at Brown University, and her residency and fellowship in gastroenterology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Her training career was distinguished by many awards for academic performance and teaching. She also holds a degree in public health from Harvard University, and has served in the leadership of several national committees working on health reform. She is published in the areas of liver disease, colon cancer screening, gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia, and women's health. She describes her care philosophy as follows: "Even the simplest one-celled organism has a digestive track. The gastrointestinal system is the center of life and the center of health. It is also the organ system most sensitive to stresses in life, changes in routine, and disruptions in the environment. I do my best to identify the root cause of any illness or discomfort and to try to manage it using medications only when needed and as transiently and as safely as possible. People should not have to spend too much time worried about their digestive system or restrict their lifestyles because of discomfort or illness. I also agree with Benjamin Franklin that 'an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.' I believe that worrisome symptoms should be evaluated promptly and am a strong advocate for colon cancer screening, exercise and a healthy, digestible diet. I like to follow my patients until they are better, and I like to be involved not only in the treatment of disease but in the active promotion of good health and good nutrition"

Dr. Agrawal is amazing. After my visit with her, she managed to schedule my endoscopy for the following day. I was in a tremendous amount of discomfort, and she responded with care, compassion and zero judgement. I highly recommend her.

Dr Agrawal is a class act, She is well-read and super smart but also compassionate and takes extra time w patients to answer questions. As both a local physician and her patient I can attest that she even comes in to see patients on her day off and has been awarded the Community Clinician award by...more

Dr. Agrawal took care of me in an emergency setting. She had a calming effect and explained the situation well. She has a sense of humor that myself and my family found very relaxing, but at the same time it was clear she was smart and competent. When she left the room, the nurses told me her...more

I really like Dr. Agrawal, and have great confidence in her abilities, but the wait to be seen by her is terrible, especially for the 5 minutes she spends w/me. The front office staff rarely smiles and is unfriendly. It seems like there's a "million" of them on the other side of the glass window....more
