She completed her undergraduate and medical education at Brown University, and her residency and fellowship in gastroenterology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Her training career was distinguished by many awards for academic performance and teaching. She also holds a degree in public health from Harvard University, and has served in the leadership of several national committees working on health reform. She is published in the areas of liver disease, colon cancer screening, gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia, and women's health. She describes her care philosophy as follows: "Even the simplest one-celled organism has a digestive track. The gastrointestinal system is the center of life and the center of health. It is also the organ system most sensitive to stresses in life, changes in routine, and disruptions in the environment. I do my best to identify the root cause of any illness or discomfort and to try to manage it using medications only when needed and as transiently and as safely as possible. People should not have to spend too much time worried about their digestive system or restrict their lifestyles because of discomfort or illness. I also agree with Benjamin Franklin that 'an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.' I believe that worrisome symptoms should be evaluated promptly and am a strong advocate for colon cancer screening, exercise and a healthy, digestible diet. I like to follow my patients until they are better, and I like to be involved not only in the treatment of disease but in the active promotion of good health and good nutrition
